Are seat covers airbag safe?
Facts checked: 23 October 2026
Short answer
They can be, if the cover is made for your seats. Many cars have side airbags inside the outer edge of the front seats, which burst out through a seam. A safe cover leaves that seam free to split. Ottoman seat covers are custom-fit and designed to be airbag-friendly, with an airbag label on the side.
Where seat airbags are
Side airbags sit inside the outer bolster of the front seats in many modern cars. Look for a small “AIRBAG” or “SRS” tag sewn into the side of the seat. When the airbag fires, it splits the seat's side seam and inflates between you and the door.
Why some seat covers are a risk
A loose, universal cover can wrap the side of the seat in material that was never meant to split, or put a seam in the wrong place. In a crash, that can slow or redirect the airbag.
How to check any seat cover
- It is cut for your exact model, year and variant, not “fits most cars”.
- The side of the cover over the airbag carries an airbag label.
- The cover's side seam lines up with the seat's own airbag seam.
- The seller asks whether your seats have side airbags before making it.
How Ottoman seat covers handle airbags
Every Ottoman seat cover is custom-fit to your car, with 360° coverage, and designed to be airbag-friendly: the airbag side carries a sewn-in airbag label and the airbag can deploy through the seam. We confirm your model, year and variant before cutting, and fit the covers ourselves, at a branch or at your door, the same day.
Installation takes 1 to 5 hours depending on the car (about 1–2 hours for 2-seaters, 2–3 hours for 5-seaters, 3–4 hours for 7-seaters and continental cars, 4–5 hours for MPVs). See the safety section on the seat cover page.
