3D vs 5D vs 7D car mats: what the letters really mean

Facts checked: 23 October 2026

Short answer

“3D”, “5D” and “7D” are not measured standards. They are sellers' labels for how raised a mat's edges are and how many layers or stitched patterns it has. Two “7D” mats from different shops can be built completely differently. Compare what protects your car instead: fit, wall coverage, thickness, surface coating and warranty.

What the letters usually mean

  • 3D: a moulded mat with raised edges that follows the shape of the footwell, instead of a flat mat lying on the floor.
  • 5D / 6D / 7D: usually a 3D shell with extra layers on top, often a stitched diamond-quilted surface and sometimes a loose second carpet layer. The higher number is marketing, not a measurement.

Because no standard defines the numbers, a higher letter does not tell you a mat is thicker, fits better or lasts longer. The details below do.

What actually matters when you compare

CheckWhy it mattersOttoman 3D car mats
FitA mat cut for your exact model and year has no gaps for dirt and cannot slide under the pedals.CNC blade-cut from your model's own pattern, confirmed by model, year and variant before cutting.
CoverageSpills run to the sides. Floor-only mats leave the walls, sills and centre tunnel exposed.Raised edge wraps the footwell walls, sills and centre tunnel in one piece.
ThicknessMore cushioning and a stiffer mat that keeps its shape.4 mm to 8 mm, depending on series.
SurfaceStitched quilting can fray and split at the thread.Stitchless hot-pressed PU leather: no thread on the surface to wear through.
CleaningA coated surface lets spills bead instead of soaking in.10× to 20× coating passes, depending on series.
GripThe driver's mat must stay put under hard braking.Spider-leg burr base grips the factory carpet.
WarrantyThe clearest sign of how long the maker expects it to last.1 to 5 years, depending on series.

How an Ottoman 3D mat is built

Ottoman calls its mats 3D because of the moulded, raised-edge shape. Inside, every mat has five layers pressed into one piece:

  1. Coating: spills bead on top and wipe off with a cloth.
  2. Leather layer: diamond-pattern PU leather, hot-pressed instead of stitched.
  3. Waterproof film: keeps liquid from reaching the foam and the car's carpet.
  4. Foam core: the cushioning underfoot.
  5. Grip base: a spider-leg burr backing that holds the factory carpet.

See the layers and the four series on the 3D car mat page.

Classic6 mm14× passes3 yearsfrom RM593
Galaxy8 mm20× passes5 yearsfrom RM763

Prices depend on your car and how many rows you cover. Every series is cut to the same pattern; the difference is thickness, coating, finish and warranty.

Questions

Is a 7D car mat better than a 3D car mat?
Not automatically. 7D is a seller's label, usually for a 3D shell with extra layers on top. Judge any mat by its fit to your model, how far it covers the footwell walls, its thickness, surface coating and warranty.
Are Ottoman car mats 3D or 5D?
Ottoman mats are 3D: moulded with a raised edge that wraps the footwell. Each mat has five layers (coating, PU leather, waterproof film, foam and grip base) pressed into one piece.
Do 3D car mats fit every car?
Only when they are cut for your car. Ottoman cuts each set from the pattern of your exact model and year, and confirms the variant with you before cutting.
